On November 29th we received approximately an inch of rain across the Midlands, the first rain in more than two weeks. Sites on Gills Creek, Smith Branch and Rocky Branch were sampled the next day and had E. coli results more than three times the state standard for contact recreation. These results are not surprising as bacteria levels usually spike in the 24-48 hours after a rain event because of stormwater runoff.
